I asked my YoungArts students to tell me about books that changed their idea of language and story. Of the dozens of books celebrated and assessed, just two were books published (at least in this country) for teens.
I wonder if you can guess which two they were.
Upping the ante: The first person to guess correctly and leaves that guess in a comment here, will win a copy of Small Damages. Why not? I'm in the book giveaway mood.

Harry. Flippin'. Potter. (This is my guess, while hoping it isn't true.)
ReplyDeleteI'm sorry, kellykellykelly, but you are so wrong.
ReplyDeleteTo Kill a Mockingbird and The Hobbit.
ReplyDeleteOh I do dislike guessing games because I want to know! But I'll say: The Book Thief and Twilight. <---look how I put those books in the same sentence.
ReplyDeleteMmmm...Hunger Games? The Fault in our Stars by John Green? Haven't read that one but heard good things...
ReplyDeleteStab in the dark: Catcher in the Rye, Diary of Anne Frank.
ReplyDeleteThe Book Thief and (perhaps?) Looking For Alaska?
ReplyDelete"Stay" or "Speak"
ReplyDeleteI can't find my copy of "Stay" to get the author, should know it but am forgetting.
"Speak" by Laurie Halse Anderson
"Wonder" by R. J. Palacio
ReplyDeleteI'm going to go with these two:
ReplyDeleteThe Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky
To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee
Though I'm not sure they both qualify given your parameters. Not sure if you mean classics or new books, either.
I can't wait to see who wins and what the winning books were
I love this question and am so curious. I'm glad we got Harry Potter out of the way, though I might have guessed that. I wouldn't be surprised to see one of John Green's novels that have been guessed, and Tolkien, but he didn't publish for teens. Because I'm scratching my head I'm going with old generation wishful thinking and saying Little Women.
ReplyDeleteThe Adventures of Pinocchio!
ReplyDeleteoh, gosh, I am loving these responses. Many of you are close. King, your pairing Cracks Me Up
ReplyDeleteTo kill a mockingbird.
ReplyDeleteCatcher In The Rye and To Kill A Mockingbird. I don't need a prize. I just need to win.
ReplyDeleteI'll go with two of my daughter's favorites:
ReplyDeleteThe Fault in Our Stars by John Green and
Thirteen Reasons Why by Jay Asher.
The Great Gatsby and The Giver are my choices:)
ReplyDeleteLaurie
I really really hope it's The Book Thief. That would give me such hope for society.
ReplyDeleteOkay. How about The Book Thief and Feed by MT Anderson.
ReplyDeleteOr anything by MT Anderson, for that matter.
(I don't need to win . . . )
ReplyDeleteI'll guess The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton.
OK, so it's The Book Thief and then I'll guess The Giver by Lois Lowry.
ReplyDeleteSOYLENT GREEN FOR ME
