Yesterday, in a coffee shop, two lovers sat reading. Intent upon the page, intense, but never the one lost to the other. I watched their faces as they read—flickers of surprise, furrows of anticipation—and when they'd reached some thing that just had to be shared, they'd say to each other: Listen to this. Such eagerness, between them, in both the reading and listening.
This morning, as I woke to this blog and discovered some new, such beautiful comments from readers, I thought of how we are all out here building our own coffee shop—settling in, nudging one another, unbundling those things that we've been on our own discovering. I thought of how earth meets sky, and how wind scatters seeds.
My parents used to read things to each other, when passages struck them. It is still the purest image of love that I think I'll ever hold.
ReplyDeleteI read about your new book, NOTHING BUT GHOSTS. Congratulations! I look forward to adding it to my library (and my to-read pile).
This image of two reading together... It is so enduring. I married a visual artist, and so books, stories, were not something I shared here in my own home until I started reading to, then with my son. Soon he'll be off to college, and I wonder what I'll do without the sound of those stories read aloud, or near.
ReplyDeleteYou have a new book coming out soon, don't you? How are things going on that front?
I've continued the reading aloud tradition with my boyfriend, and I love it.
ReplyDeleteYes, I do have the sequel to my first book coming out in March--it's called Violet by Design, and it should be a fun launch that includes fashion week in New York and a comedy show in NC. :)
Melissa, you most DEFINITELY have all the fun with your books. Being a fellow Project Runway and ANTM fan, I can only imagine what a great time you are about to have.
ReplyDeleteSomehow I've never written a book that warranted a launch party.
I think I am going to make that my next goal!
