What I'll Be Reading Next
Saturday, December 27, 2008
In which I share (under terrible light on a rainy day, with my hair in my face and...(well, I could go on and on, but we're speaking of books here not fashion, and I've run out of parentheses)) a few words about the books that sit here on my glass-topped desk. I've not had time to read like this in perhaps 20 years. Each book making me hungrier for the next.
After thought: Roy Blount Jr. would never be my friend were he to watch this vlog. Because I use the term "of course" too much, for starters. Because I keep saying the anemic "I'm looking forward to...." I'm looking forward, of course, to improving my spontaneous speech in the year to come. I can and will resolve to resolve the same on New Year's Eve. I'm looking forward to that. Of course.

What a great vlog and about books at that! I just bought the Collected Tales of Gogol for my friend for Christmas! I'm finishing up Willow by Julia Hoban, it's amazing! Snd then I think I'm going to read Tales of Beedle the Bard!
Beth, What a joy to see you, hear you, listen to your beautiful voice! While you read, I will be packing the car preparing for our road trip to Virginia and Maryland. I hope to read while in the car....but, I will most likely watch the world go by, listen to my favorite CD's and nap during the time that John is driving.
Happy New Year to my dear cousin. Love, Libby
What a great vlog! I'm catching up on a bunch of reading and plan to make a list of books I want to read in 2009!
I'm packing right now to go back to Germany on Monday and my suitcases are FULL of books. One of the first I will read is my LibraryThing Early Reviewer selection Cracked Up To Be and then ... we'll see! I have Undercover and Nothing but Ghosts in my carry on :)
Alea, You have out booked me in every way (any one who wants to know what I am talking about must visit her blog)! Can't wait to hear about Willow and Beedle.
Libby, Safe and happy travels!
PJ, Your list is bound to surprise and amaze.
Lenore, May your flight feel as like a mere five minutes and your cat be in Germany, fluffing up pillows, making your soup.
I so enjoy your vlogs, and it was especially fun to hear you talk about what's on your reading list. I've had some extra reading time this week, and it is definitely a luxury. I'm reading (still) a biography of Eudora Welty. I got a bit bogged down in details during the first couple of chapters, but now more interesting topics are surfacing. I'm also reading Straight Man, by Richard Russo, a novel that's alternately hilarious and heartbreaking.
I'm looking forward to more of your thoughts on Goldengrove, and on Olive Kittredge. I read it some time ago and was fascinated by the way she wove the stories together, and the way Olive's character was revealed, even when she wasn't present in the story.
Happy reading :)
Becca
You are much too kind, but I thank you. I often think that this blog is where I feel safest to be myself. It's a gentle and encouraging community. I think I might fall with you on the Goldengrove. Can't wait to start Kitteridge.
I love your vlogs! You are a natural, regardless of your self-critique... :^)
I have many books on deck, too, the first two of which are your ZENOBIA and UNDERCOVER. Can't wait!
Confession: snuggled next to ZENOBIA is THE CATCHER IN THE RYE, which I never have read (eek!).
But yours comes first.
XO
A.
Anna.
Um.
Anna.
Zenobia will not stand up against Catcher. In fact, it was falling down now, slumping down now, as I write.
But it's a flattery!
That was so fun, Beth. Thank you for sharing by video your "to read" list.
I currently have my nose in few books and it is hard to know which to pick up first each day, I'm liking them so much. Home by Marilynne Robinson, Lamb In His Bosom by Caroline Miller, That Distant Land, Wendell Berry. Oh, and I'm finishing the audio "The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe," which is a "read at Christmas whenever I remember to book." I listen sporadically to it as I cook in the kitchen.
