Yesterday in my travels I came upon this boy on ice—sweeping a hockey stick before him, training a puck. The pond ice was blue, and beneath it swam herds of orange koy, slides of sunset colors going by. I walked the circumference of the pond, then walked out onto the ice, where I could imagine myself pushing off and gaining speed. Throwing myself open to the wind, a red scarf trailing behind.

OK, is it just me, or does seeing a kid skate on ice make anyone else freak out. But remember, I'm from warm weather land.
I just finished reading Undercover. Ice-skating, poetry, words, nature treasure hunting, romance...what's not to love? Thank you!
I'm so happy that another BK novel is available soon :-)
And another one is in the making! Don't. stop.
Thanks for this post. Hope you get the real deal soon.
Sherry, thank you. I wrote endlessly and exhaustedly this weekend. Something happened. It won't be in my hands soon. It's been thrilling to go back in and make this book I've nurtured for so long so much better.
And thank you, too, for reading UNDERCOVER. My first foray into this kind of fiction.
PJ.... Do you know that this boy skated on ice that was fringed with unfrozen water? I'd thought about taking my own skates. I didn't imagine the pond would hold my 107 pounds.
Someday soon I hope to skate again.
Okay, you live in the most picturesque town EVER. Do you know that?
Santa Monica bites.

Anna,
You just inspired this morning's post.....
This boy looks like he could be my hockey-playing son, who turned 13 the day you snapped this picture.
