Beseiged: A Poem
Thursday, February 26, 2009
Such sweet succulence stolen
in the night when I did not lie sleeping,
when I assumed the sound of ruin
was in my head, something I had said,
regretted saying, and not the doe and her fawn
in the garden of fritillary. They had been so spooned
over with near fruit, my spotted lilies.
They had been so verging close to giving me
morning more still and lovely than any
night. How fleeting, how wretched,
the possibility of meaning.
in the night when I did not lie sleeping,
when I assumed the sound of ruin
was in my head, something I had said,
regretted saying, and not the doe and her fawn
in the garden of fritillary. They had been so spooned
over with near fruit, my spotted lilies.
They had been so verging close to giving me
morning more still and lovely than any
night. How fleeting, how wretched,
the possibility of meaning.

:)
Oh, I will keep those words and that image in my head and heart all day! That is truly beautiful, Beth.
'The possibility of meaning'...open always to interpretation, I guess...lovely thought.
Gorgeous!
Your poems are stunning to me, Beth.

Wow. My favorite lines: "stolen / in the night when I did not lie sleeping" and "How fleeting, how wretched, / the possibility of meaning."
Ditto Emily Ruth.
Thank you, generous souls....
This is a neat poem.
Thank you!
Matt! Thank you.
:)
How you sweep us up and take us. So poignant.
Hi Beth!
The natural embezzling you illustrate took my straight to the words of my main man, William Shakespeare!
The sun's a thief, and with his great attraction/ Robs the vast sea; the moon's an arrant thief,/ And her pale fire she snatches from the sun.
Timon of Athens
