For the love of a cat

Thursday, March 26, 2009

She lived in a cemetery up the street, our Boston year, and then one night, during a thunderstorm, she was at our back door. Our mother left bowls of milk on the stoop until the bowls were brought inside, and that is how this calico became our cat, the only pet I ever had. I was in third grade then, and she lived until I was 25. I don't ever remember her slipping away inside the fog of disappointment or the presumption of self importance.

"You should have a pet," a friend told me the other day, and I wondered why she said it, what about my life seemed hollow or absent. Then I remembered the days when Colors would claw into a tree and leap to a gutter and climb in my second-floor window, just to see me. I remembered holding her in my arms, and doing nothing but that, and feeling happy.

I'll be in the Big Apple tomorrow on client work. If I don't have time to post before I dash off for an early train, imagine me imagining you.

Yes, get a cat! I can recommend the Birman breed. Then you can be just like me.

Hello, I've enjoyed what I've read here, and what I saw.

Is "imagine me imagining you" metathinking? ;~)

These old photos have so much residual red in them. Thanks to you all for putting up with that.

And TC... perhaps indeed you have coined a term based on my own loose early morning thinking!

I imagine that, rather than you finding a cat, a cat will find you. They have an uncanny knack for doing that.

If you eat a cannoli in NY, think of me! I miss those cannoli.

A couple years ago my daughter asked if we could have a cat or a baby. We got her the cat. We spent weeks visiting the animal shelter and watching the cats. One day a volunteer put this cat in my daughter's lap and it immediately started purring. We took him home. He's been wonderful.

Have fun in NY.

I already know that when the kids leave home, we'll have to get a pet. ;)

My parents have a calico that found us as well, just wandered up one day during spring break my freshman year at college when I went for a walk to enjoy the warm sun. She's still living in their garage and back porch. She's tiny, only about 5 pounds, with just a little stub for a tail.

I can't imagine my life without animals. Visit your local humane society if you decide to get one.

I think you need another Calico in your life, if the cat is calling your name at night, Beth.

I am almost at the stage of catnapping one off the street, I miss those I had so dreadfully...

Enjoy the weekend!

To all of you today who so endearingly embraced the spirit of my Colors today (she floats above us all, purring down), thank you.

To all of you who dreamed out loud with me about a new soul in the house, well... That, too lifted me on a cold, gray day.

What a great image--Colors climbing the tree to visit you in your room. There are few things more comforting to me than cuddling with a cat. Thank you for sharing these memories with us today.

Cats are lovely companions. I can't imagine life without mine.

What a beautiful kitty! Hi, Colors! I'm glad that she found your family, that you found her, and that she lived such a long, beautiful life.

Have a safe trip! :)

Find a farm with an old barn and some barn cats and take home one of the kittens. That's what I did and Desi just makes me so happy. She's my cuddle buddy when I read.

Pets are so wonderful. I grew up with all kinds of cats, dogs, horses, and even goats. Santa Claus, my then five-year-old brother named the goat.
