What Blogging Is

Friday, June 5, 2009

Early in the writing of a book, the mind is a jostle. It's bump and grind. It's lonely. It's spending six hours writing a sentence or two, and wondering the next day, What was I thinking? If I can't get a scene right, I can't move on. In the beginning, I hardly move on.

Yesterday, though, I had this mini-breakthrough. I had something that might be something; I wanted someone to tell. But how do you justify crashing in on another's day—smashing up whatever thoughts they're having with your own odd nascencies? I've learned through the years how to snare my own impulse—how to hold back, keep calm, contain the urge.

And then blogging happened. Blogging became my thinking out loud—for better or for worse, that's what this is. It asserts itself against no one who cannot make the time. It lets me say, Hey. This happened. To whomever might wish to hear.

I am grateful (beyond words) for those of you who wish to hear.

Beth,
I must admit that you're part of my morning routine. I like your blog because it's meaningful, thought provoking and well written. And it's pithy. It's not a long monologue on getting up, having coffee, doing laundry...which I get enough of on facebook and twitter.
So keep on telling us your good and bad news and your regulars will be hear to listen, comment, console, rejoice, etc.

I follow many blogs (anonymously) and comment on few… but I must say that I really do enjoy reading your writer’s reflections- I have gained insight into some of my own struggles creating story.

I posted and audio of my latest Chapter XVII on my blog page – I hope you will get a chance to give it a listen.

I love this post. I've often felt like sitting down in the morning and writing a blog post was like a writing exercise, a warm up to the work at hand. It got me through the 1st draft of my novel. I no longer post every day, but I so completely enjoy stopping by here to see what's new and where your thoughts are taking you.

After spending the morning 'supposed to be writing' and doing errands instead, I read your lovely post. Now I'm not so mad at myself for reading blogs instead of writing. Facebook, tho...that's another story. Even if it's only one sentence, I'm working on my novel now. Thanks.

I feel the same way about blogging, it is also a fun way to noodle around with thoughts and feelings that are racing around in my head...

Perfectly put, Beth! I think of blogging as putting my thoughts out there to the void and then lo and behold...the void is listening. :)

It is wonderful, isn't it?

It bothers me when people who don't blog disparage blogging. And when bloggers worry they're being too selfish. It's your blog; if we didn't like it, we wouldn't read it.

Oh, I know the feeling. The fact that people would be willing to come and read what you've got to say is always mindblowing to me.
