Do You Know Where You Are Going?
Sunday, July 12, 2009
A conversation held earlier today, at church:
"So you when decide to write a story, is the whole thing already there in your head? Is it, then, just about writing down all you've already dreamed up?"
"Oh, goodness. No."
"No?"
"I have no idea where I am going. I live my life lost."
Or maybe it's just that I feel that way now, with this new book, so unknown, so demanding. Every line a tangle and tussle. Every line that I actually keep the next day a miracle of strange proportions.
(For a leavened moment, for something refreshing and new, take a starship ride over to Daniel's Daily Drawings, where earlier today he had a surprise awaiting me.)

Oh, gracious. I have to know where I'm going or I can't get there.
Some writers do. I have a friend who can't bear to start writing until she's worked it all out in her head. Others don't. I have no idea until it's written down. Sometimes I think I have the idea and it changes as I write it down.
Usually when I start writing something, I'm too lazy to outline. I wrote a Harry Potter fanfic in third grade which was meant to be a short, 5-10 page story, but eventually became a crazy, hilarious, random 177 page work. But at other times, I have a vague idea in my head and the story turns out quite wonderfully despite minimal planning.
I know where I'm going, Beth. Cawazy.
i'm glad you like the ghosts
I should think it would be rather dull if I knew where I was going :)
Just another day at the office 'round here...
