Already Missing Him

I am trying not to look at the calendar. I am trying not to think: In less than three weeks, my boy will be back at school, in a dorm, in his classes. My boy, who stops to see, who leans in to inquire, who walks to this side of my desk, plants a kiss on my forehead, and says, "You are looking so pretty today." No matter what I am wearing, no matter my hair, no matter what I see when I dare to see myself.
He has been writing all summer long. Yesterday I went out for three hours. When I returned he had 11 new pages, done.
"Eleven new pages?" I said. "But that's impossible."
"Not if you figure it all out before you start typing," he said.
Figure it out before you start typing, I thought. Figure it out.

Somehow, I can't see you figuring it out before you start. I think you need to mull things over (several times)to produce something that will satisfy you. Don't mess with a good thing.
I think there are many ways one can go about writing, and as long as the end product has the potential to be spectacular, and you don't go about the process in an illegal manner, then whatever path you decide to take to your end goal is the right way. And I love that he's also writing, like you.
I know exactly how you feel. My son's classes start on the 24th. When he first comes home, we have to re-adjust and figure out our new roles - by the end of the summer we're settled in and I'm not ready to see him go.
Lucky guy. Even though I have my writing all figured out, I find it difficult to do more than a page or two at a time, usually.
He's a careful and peculiar sort. I like his sort.
You hit the jackpot when it comes to sons!! How exciting that he can write so easily and regularly. That writing gene must be active in him:)
Wow ... what a wonderful son! Any special pointers on how to raise such a wonderful young man?! :-)
It's so hard to see them leave. I am glad mine can still only go within walking distance. Some writers figure it out before they write; others don't. I think there are just different breeds of writers.
Just last night I read your novel, Nothing but Ghosts and then found your blog here. Thank you so much for writing this book... your own process works wonderfully and that novel is proof in the pudding as my mom used to say. I posted on my own blog about the book and what my reading of it meant to me. If you are interested you can find the post here.

I too have a young one returning to college in a couple of weeks and my heart twists each minute that time gets closer. What a beautiful son it seems you have raised. What a lucky mom you are.
Thank you for sharing of your own talent. You have a line in the novel that says, "Books don't mean a bit of difference, unless somebody reads them searching for something." That is true but where would us readers be if it weren't for gifted writers, such as yourself, writing the books/stories.
Yeah, I can't believe summer vacation is almost over. Your son sounds so amazing! Lucky you--enjoy every moment.
You have the most amazing son, Beth. I can't possibly figure out my storyline before I write; I just can't. And he sounds like one of the sweetest people to have around. It's so hard to not be able to have someone so special around you all the time.
Oh, SURE. Make it sound easy! ;-)
Three weeks. I was wondering the timeline but did not want to ask...
XO
A.
Your son is so wise and wonderful...no wonder your heart aches when you're apart. And I am familiar with that particular pain.
Thinking of you these next few weeks, knowing you'll savor the moments.
