I once sat next to an old, well known and distinguished anthropology professor at a wedding. We talked about what the peoples of the world have in common. Being widely traveled, his words carry some sort of weight I cannot boast of. “There is nothing, not one single thing, that is commonly shared among everyone in the world,” he said. “Nothing?” I said, “not even the meaning of a Smile?” “No, not even the smile,” he said. He is a professor, I should believe him. And I do realize a smile can carry a number of different messages, from arrogance to helplessness.

I have just shared a week with my husband and sons and their girlfriend/wife/child. Baby Alfred, just four months old, has, in my opinion (obviously not the professor’s) cracked the “people code”. Every morning he greeted us with a - Smile. He then continued charming us throughout the day, with generous helpings of - Smiles.

I Smile back at you, Beth. You have cracked the “people code”. My heart bounces a little as I look at your friendly eyes, cheeks, mouth.....
